Every year that song, on a loop, making me think about what I have done this year AND what I haven’t. Soon it will be time for all those reflective posts and blogs of all the achievements of the year, all the goals reached and the milestones passed. But what if it hasn’t been that kind of year. What if you are ending the year feeling stuck, or stalled, with more undone than done ?
What if ? well, I suppose it depends on how you started the year and what aspirations you had. How realistic they were and what happened along the way that either changed your aspirations, shifted your focus onto other things or stopped you in your tracks.
Every year for as long as I can remember I started January with resolutions, all focused on similar things, usually health related, but sometimes not.
Every year for as long as I can remember I started February with a list of resolutions that I had not started to achieve, feeling a bit deflated that my resolve wasn’t as resolute as I thought.
Every year for as long as I can remember I have had a similar pattern. Jan and Feb are a quiet, hunker down kind of time. March onwards is a going about my business, enjoying life kind of a time, September and October are a starting new, high energy kind of a time and November and December are a preparation, frenetic, building up kind of a time.
So knowing my patterns, the best time to start something new is in the spring and autumn, not January when I am naturally low energy/engagement with the world.
Of course this year, this 2020, has been a year like no other. A year that I am sure none of us want to see again. Ever. But as it draws to a close, its natural to think about what the year has brought, what has been achieved, what of the year you want to take into the next and what you want to leave behind.
So what are your goals for the new year ?
For me, I’m about 14 months away from being 50 and will be a healthy weight by then, I will also spend this year building new as well as strengthening existing connections and doing more of the work that I love. It’s as simple as those things. I will build on this year with its triumphs, tribulations and trials and take the learning into the next.
So what about you, what questions are you asking yourself as we drawn the year to a close ? Here are some thoughts.
- What activities do I want to do more of in 2021 ?
- Who do I want to spend more time with in 2021 ?
- If I could sum up my hopes for the forthcoming year in a single word then what is it ?
As ever, if you would find it useful to have someone to walk alongside you next year, helping you switch your own lights on and understand how to be the best version of you that you can be then get in touch. I’d love to talk to you.
